By Jane Goodall

The Poor House Lane Sagas is a series of historical novels set in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The series follows the lives of the Goodall family, a working-class family who lived in the small coal mining town of Cumberland.

The Woman from Heartbreak House is the first book in the series. It tells the story of Sarah Goodall, who was born in a small village in England in 1860. In 1883, she married John Goodall, a coal miner from Cumberland, and moved to the town with him. The book follows Sarah as she struggles to adjust to her new life in a foreign country, makes a home for her family, and deals with the challenges of raising children in a working-class environment.

Historical Context

The Poor House Lane Sagas are set against the backdrop of the coal mining and logging industries in the Comox Valley. The coal mining industry in Cumberland began in the 1870s and reached its peak in the early 1900s. The logging industry in the Comox Valley began in the 1880s and also reached its peak in the early 1900s. Both industries were dangerous and demanding, and they took a heavy toll on the workers and their families.

The Goodall family was one of many working-class families who lived in the Comox Valley during this period. John Goodall worked as a coal miner for many years, and Sarah Goodall raised their children and worked as a seamstress to supplement the family income.

The Woman from Heartbreak House

Sarah Goodall was born in a small village in England in 1860. She was the daughter of a blacksmith and a seamstress. In 1883, she married John Goodall, a coal miner from Cumberland, and moved to the town with him. The couple had nine children, six of whom survived to adulthood.

The first years of marriage were difficult for Sarah. She had to adjust to a new country, a new culture, and a new way of life. She missed her family and friends in England, and she found it difficult to adjust to the harsh living conditions in Cumberland.

However, Sarah was a strong and determined woman. She made a home for her family, and she raised her children with love and care. She also worked as a seamstress to supplement the family income.

In 1898, John Goodall was killed in a mining accident. Sarah was left a widow with six children to raise. She continued to work as a seamstress, and she also took in boarders to help make ends meet.

Sarah Goodall was a remarkable woman. She was a loving mother, a hard worker, and a survivor. She faced many challenges in her life, but she never gave up. She is an inspiration to us all.
