Early Life and Education

Leo Tolstoy was born on September 9, 1828, in Yasnaya Polyana, Russia. He was the fourth of five children born to Count Nikolai Ilyich Tolstoy and Countess Maria Nikolaevna Volkonskaya. Tolstoy's father was a wealthy landowner and military officer, and his mother was a devout Orthodox Christian. Tolstoy's early life was marked by tragedy.
